Industry Speculates Over Whether Apple iPad Will Change Gaming

Each time that a new platform for video games reaches the market, it tends to have a ripple effect on other games across other platforms, say game industry insiders, and the new iPad digital device from Apple may not be a game specific platform, but it may still end up changing the way that consumers are able to experience games themselves. There are already several hundred titles available on the new device and many believe that players will gravitate to the device due to its unique screen format, with Godfinger being a prime example of the type of play which could be offered: a simulation styled after the famous PC title Black & White which players position themselves as deities that must appease their loyal worshipers and play out the role of a mythological god of immense powers. The iPhone and iPod Touch had done their work to pull in famous game publishers like Ubisoft, Activision and Electronic Arts, so it comes as no surprise that the iPad would appear to be quite appealing for developers, as well.

Big titles from the world of console systems have already hit mobile platforms with games like Rock Band, Assassin’s Creed and Call of Duty performing quite well on Apple’s other devices, but the new iPad offers a wholly different approach to gaming that has a more conventional display style which could work for games that are less limited than many mobile device platforms allow. While the majority of game industry observers are not convinced that the iPad will totally revolutionize gaming, it could lead to specific titles that explore the device’s possibilities as a tablet interface.
